PAofVic -- The shift to a low carbon economy may sound daunting but in reality, the transition offers opportunity for significant job growth, a more stable economy, and, if we approach it right, could help to shrink the income gap by generating good, family supporting jobs.
And, there is a compelling argument that investing in a low carbon
economy now is both good for the planet and the economy in the long
run. In fact, researchers have shown that many initiatives would
simply pay for themselves over time.
In a new report, the
International Energy Agency found that carbon dioxide emissions from
global energy generation did not increase over the past three years,
yet the economy grew. This is great news for the climate and
demonstrates that we can decouple... greenhouse gas emissions from
economic growth while creating jobs.

IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

"Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions were flat for a third straight year in 2016 even as the global economy grew, according to the International Energy Agency, signaling a continuing decoupling of emissions and economic activity. This was the result of growing renewable power generation, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, as well as structural changes in the global economy."
Energy transition can lead to decarbonisation, says IRENA report

A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
has found that we can achieve a significant reduction in carbon
dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050 if renewables drive much of our power
generation.
“To achieve decarbonisation by 2050, renewables
should be 80% of power generation and 65% of total primary energy
supply,” according to the report.
Further, the report states that while the investment required is an additional $29 trillion until 2050, this only amounts to 0.4% of global GDP.
Far from the White House, the energy industry remains focused on climate

This is an interesting read from a Brookings Fellow about CERAWeek – the annual international conference of energy industry leaders, experts, government officials and policymakers – held earlier this month.
“The main message I heard last week is that the energy industry largely isn’t changing course. Instead, energy industry leaders are staying the course on low-carbon investments and strategies, both in the United States and globally. I came away from the conference with three main messages about the industry’s response.”
