Back in February, we sent questions to the three major political parties asking them where they stand on committing to a poverty reduction plan for BC. We’ve analyzed the responses to our survey, their election platforms, and their media responses to share with you at www.makepovertypublic.ca/political.
Click the image below to download a poster with a summary of the responses for all 7 pillars and click here for a PDF of the full analysis to read and share.
And, over the next few days, look out for our social media posts with graphics for each pillar. Here's some to share from today and join us at #MakePovertyPublic:
- Who will raise the rates and by how much?
- Will you increase the minimum wage to $15/hr?
- It's not an effective poverty reduction plan if some groups are left behind:

In 2006, Newfoundland and Labrador became the second Canadian province to introduce a formal action plan to reduce poverty. Having shared one of the worst poverty rates in Canada with BC, they have reduced their poverty rate and food insecurity significantly through their poverty reduction plan. Dan explains how and shares more about the strengths, as well as the weaknesses, of the NL plan.
BC still has one of the highest poverty rates and is now the only province without a plan. Vote for a poverty reduction plan for BC using our election analysis here.
