In times like these, we need LabourStart more than ever

In times like these, we need LabourStart more than ever r1 ... The last year has been a tough one for workers and their unions around the world.

That's why it's more important than ever that we build on the traditions of trade union solidarity -- combined with the latest technology. That's what LabourStart has been doing since 1998, and that's why I'm writing today to ask for your help.

In the last year, LabourStart has run no fewer than 35 campaigns in support of workers in Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Gambia, Haiti, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Korea, Liberia, Malaysia, Morocco, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Peru, Turkey, UK, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

In many cases, we were able to help workers on the ground with their struggles, forcing employers to the bargaining table, getting trade unionists released from jail, ending lockouts, winning strikes.

We are currently campaigning in support of a jailed Iranian trade unionist on hunger strike, journalists fighting for their rights in Somalia, dock workers in Madagascar sacked for joining a union, union leaders in Turkey facing prison terms and oil workers in Kazakhstan facing severe repression.

I am confident that in many of these cases, our campaigns make a difference.

Our work was recognised last year when we received both the Arthur Svensson international prize for trade union rights (Norway) and the Sheila McKechnie Foundation's Campaigner Award (UK).

In the last year we've also held one Global Solidarity Conference (in Toronto) and are planning another. We published another great book for trade unionists, this one full of inspiring stories of migrant workers' struggles. Our 861 volunteer correspondents continue to post hundreds of news stories to our website and via our news service. Our mailing lists in dozens of languages have grown to well over 135,000 readers. We have a large and growing presence on Facebook and Twitter.

All of this costs money.

I know that these are tough times for workers and for the labour movement. But I hope you agree that LabourStart provides an invaluable tool and that I can count on your support.
