The UK has followed France in announcing a ban on the sale of all diesel and gas cars and vans by 2040. Petronas has pulled the plug on Canada's huge Pacific Northwest LNG project due, they said, to market conditions. Anti-pipeline fighters blockaded the entrance to Kinder Morgan's export terminal in Richmond, California. The new coalition government in British Columbia that includes the Green Party is threatening to bring a hault to Trudeau's plans for Kinder Morgan's TransMountain project.
Big oil has overturned Portland's fossil fuel ban. Seattle city council has voted to tax the rich. Debate is still brewing over David Wallace-Wells's "The Uninhabitable Earth" article, some saying "our aversion to doom and gloom is dooming us" and others saying "alarmism" is disempowering. SCNCC has created a new "Existential Threat" category to archive responses ranging from Michael Mann to Paul Beckwith. 2015, 2016, 2017 have been the three hottest years since records began. The Ezra Silk-Margaret Klein Salamon “Victory Plan”: limitations, contradictions, and questions
Richard Smith, a writer active in SCNCC, explains that Margaret Klein Salamon, clinical psychologist and founder and director of The Climate Mobilization (TCM) , responded [to the New York Magazine's "The Uninhabitable Earth" article] that the climate movement fears to tell the awful truth because many think this could paralyze people into inaction. She says, “it is OK, indeed imperative, to tell the whole, frightening story . . . it’s the job of those of us trying to protect humanity and restore a safe climate to tell the truth about the climate crisis and help people process and channel their own feelings — not to preemptively try to manage and constrain those feelings.”But Smith argues: "I’m no psychologist but it seems to me she’s certainly correct that facing up to the whole awful truth is essential to motivating people to confront our existential crisis and “the first step to taking substantial action.” Yet as an ecosocialist, I would say that Salamon either does not fully grasp or is too fearful to confront, the reality of scope of the necessary systemic political-economic changes we would need to make happen in order to prevent ecological apocalypse and the collapse of civilization – namely: the overthrow of capitalism and the institution of an ecosocialist social order."

SCNCC is a joint Canadian and US coalition of ecosocialists and fellow travellers united in the belief that capitalism is driving climate change and that a radical international grassroots movement can stop it. Green capitalism is a dead end. So are liberal parties like the US Democrats and the corporate friendly approach of most Green NGOs. SCNCC believes the climate justice movement will unite with the labor movement and other struggles for liberation to create an alternative to the upside down world shaped by fossil fuels and corporate power. Another world is possible, but we need more ecosocialists to make it happen.
