The situation in Venezuela is perilous and getting worse every day. But although it is paralyzing the government, the economic and social calamity overtaking the country has created unprecedented opportunities for Venezuela’s embattled free press. For the first time in more than a decade, allies of the government are now looking for new ways to speak to the people—not only in Venezuela, but throughout the world. No matter what happens as the crisis unfolds, the resurgence of Venezuela’s independent media has already reminded us why a free press is an essential part of an open society.
