PAOV –People routinely get away with committing unconscionable acts of cruelty to innocent animals without any consequences. It happens every single day: through systematic, industrial scale abuse on factory farms, puppy mills, and laboratories; in zoos, theme parks and circuses; on our streets, in our neighbourhoods, or in wildlife.
The only thing more outrageous than animal abuse itself is when the crime goes unaccounted for. What do you do when authorities look the other way for animal abuse? Where do you turn when law enforcement fails to bring animal abusers to justice?

Putting an End to Puppy Mills
For many animal advocates, puppy mills are ground zero for fighting animal cruelty. They cite example after example of how these cramped, dangerous, unsanitary facilities put profits over puppies. Experts say the best way to shut down puppy mills to stop the demand.Barbara from Montreal wanted to help do just that. After she saw chains like PetSmart and Petland stop selling puppies from all breeders, and focus on encouraging adoption, she wanted Kijiji — Canada’s largest classifieds website — to do the same. So far more than 124,000 people have joined her fight.

Fighting Cruelty in Our Food Chain
The grocery chain Loblaws gets much of it’s chicken supplied by Lilydale farms. When Mark went undercover at Lilydale to see how they treated their chickens, he was horrified. Workers ripped the legs off conscious chickens, slammed their bodies against walls, and in one case, an employee tried to rip a chicken in half with his bare hands. Some of the abuse he documented is too graphic to even describe. To make things worse, much of the cruelty was in full view of management. They stood by and did nothing.That’s why Mark, working with Mercy for Animals, started a petition calling on Loblaws to enact an animal welfare policy that would require Lilydale and other suppliers to end animal abuse in their food chains. At last count, more than 61,000 people have joined Mark in his fight.
Mark’s story is inspiring and luckily not unique. Many are holding companies responsible to end animal cruelty wherever possible. It’s exciting to see the impact these campaigns are having on pushing the private sector to lead on protecting animals.

Prosecuting Animal Torture
In mid July, a video surfaced showing a shark flailing in agony as she is brutally dragged behind a speedboat off the coast of Florida while the perpetrators laugh. The individuals involved have a history of using social media to display torturous acts of cruelty to other marine animals — while boasting about their ability to get away with crimes against animals due to lack of law enforcement.Dan refused to let this horrific behavior continue off the hook. Since 250,000 people have signed his petition, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has opened an investigation, and the Manatee County Prosecutor’s Office has stated that they may be announcing charges soon.
