PAOV --

Right now, hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing mass murder in Myanmar. They’re members of the Rohingya community -- an ethnic Muslim group often said to be the world’s most persecuted minority -- and the current wave of violence is the latest in a long and brutal history of abuse at the hands of Myanmar’s military.

I’ve worked on social justice issues for decades. As a human being, I can’t sit back and do nothing if I have any means at my disposal to stand up for a group that’s being persecuted. That’s why I started this petition urging the Canadian government to revoke Myanmar de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s honorary Canadian citizenship, which was granted to her almost ten years ago because of her history as an advocate for democracy and human rights.

But now, Suu Kyi’s office has refused to allow United Nations investigators into the Rakhine state to probe allegations of mass abuses by the military, including massacres, rape, the torching of villages and the burning of murdered civilians. We must stand up for people like Petam Ali, a rice farmer who returned to his village only to find the burnt and decapitated body of his grandmother inside his destroyed home.

What is happening under Suu Kyi's watch in Myanmar right now is about as far as you could get from the "ideals of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law" that were the basis of her receiving her honorary Canadian citizenship. Anyone who is complicit in genocide -- either actively or through silence -- they are not Canadian.

Please join me -- let’s send a message to our government that Aung San Suu Kyi’s honorary Canadian citizenship must be revoked.
