PAOV --

Weeks ago, Danielle from British Columbia was racing down the first base line in her weekly rec league softball game. Eyes focused forward, a ball thrown from third base suddenly struck her in the side of the head, leaving her unconscious and severely injured.

Danielle required emergency brain surgery to address a fractured skull and bursted artery. The injury happened because she wasn’t wearing a helmet -- they’re not required. Fortunately, she’s on the road to recovery, but that’s not enough: she wants to prevent others from suffering from similar serious injuries.

Danielle’s petition on Change.org urges Softball Canada to protect player safety by making helmets mandatory for all batters and base runners across the nation.

Danielle’s traumatic experience came a year after another player from B.C. passed away from the same hit to the head with a softball. Upon hearing of his story and having her own, she believes that rules set by the national softball governing body need immediate change.

Danielle is fighting to have this issue addressed by Softball Canada during its next board meeting on September 29. If you want to show your support for her effort to do so, you can sign her petition.
