Harvey, Irma, Maria: This is the hurricance season scientists expected ...and feared, by Eric Holthaus
"Category 5 hurricanes, like Irma and Maria, are the pinnacle of nature’s fury. There is simply no weather event on Earth that can cause so much destruction so quickly. They are worst-case scenarios.
"On Wednesday morning, Maria became one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded to make landfall, striking southeastern Puerto Rico with winds of up to 155 mph. Puerto Rican residents rationed basic supplies and hunkered down in fragile infrastructure in anticipation of the storm, which wiped out 100 percent of the island’s power. Recovery could take years.
"There is evidence that we are emerging from an era of messy meteorological data, where we were blind to warming seas strengthening hurricanes because the really damaging ones were rare. If that’s true, weather historians may look to this year as the beginning of a frightening new phase of superstorms...."Further, there’s nothing in recorded history that resembles what Irma and Maria have inflicted on Caribbean islands in recent days. Since Sept. 6, the two hurricanes have made six separate landfalls at Category-5 strength. Before this month, just 18 such landfalls had happened in the previous 165 years (and never more than three in a single year). Clearly there’s something happening here — and there’s a developing consensus among scientists about what factors are responsible."

Climate Science: Is there room for optimism?
A new study, not without controversy, has beeen published that asserts that 1.5C of warming is still possible. The paper is posted here. If it is possible, wouldn't that require ending carbon emissions immediately? So is that politically and economically viable? Don't we also need negative emissions technology at this late date? Technically impossible? Would a 'socially impossible' ecosocialist revolution that 'sped things up' avert ecocide? Join the discussion....Embodied Materialism and Women Who Sequester CO2
Women all over the globe work daily to restore and enrich ecosystems, grow food, and cope with the devastation patriarchal capitalism has foisted on us all. Somehow, though, the reproductive labor of women and ecosocialist theory seem cut off from each other. Ecosocialists may write about reproductive labor, but they rarely consult the women who most frequently perform this work to learn what wisdom has come to them through their labor. The embodied materialism of Ariel Salleh and the work of WECAN International may offer ways to bring theory and practice together. Join the discussion...What Lies Beneath? The Scientific Understatement fo Climate Risks
There has been much discussion of the "conservative" nature of the maintream scientific bodies in accurately portraying the urgency of the climate situation, particularly, in regards to non-linear, abrupt climate change. David Spratt and Ian Dunlop argue that there is a historic reticence on the part of the IPCC "to spell out the full risk implications of climate science in the absence of perfect information." The Report, they say "seeks to alert the wider community and leaders to these limitations and urges change to the IPCC approach, and to the wider UNFCCC negotiations." David, you have defended the IPCC in its approaches in the past while enlightening readers on the inside processes of the IPCC. Could you respond to Spratt and Dunlop's claims and recommendations? SCNCC is a joint Canadian and US coalition of ecosocialists and fellow travellers united in the belief that capitalism is driving climate change and that a radical international grassroots movement can stop it. Green capitalism is a dead end. So are liberal parties like the US Democrats and the corporate friendly approach of most Green NGOs. SCNCC believes the climate justice movement will unite with the labor movement and other struggles for liberation to create an alternative to the upside down world shaped by fossil fuels and corporate power. Another world is possible, but we need more ecosocialists to make it happen.
