Since we wrote to you last, Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has continued to face international scrutiny for failing to condemn what’s been described as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” targeting Rohingya Muslims in her country.

This week, Prime Minister Trudeau urged Aung San Suu Kyi to step up: “As the de facto democratic leader of Myanmar and as a renowned advocate for human rights, you have a particular moral and political obligation to speak out against this appalling cruelty, and to do whatever is in your power to stop it.”

Yet when Suu Kyi delivered a national address on Tuesday, she failed to acknowledge the gravity of the situation or respond to allegations of ethnic cleansing. This growing petition is calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to take the unprecedented action of stripping Suu Kyi of her honorary Canadian citizenship, which she received in 2007.
