Proposed law protects children & farmworkers

Dear PAOV,

Tomorrow, Congress is holding a briefing on the brain-harming pesticide, chlorpyrifos. With bills to ban this dangerous chemical moving in both the House and Senate, powerful momentum is building to protect children, farmworkers and rural families.

You can help! Urge your Representative to become a co-sponsor of the Pesticide Protection Act.

The lead sponsors of the House bill to ban chlorpyrifos — Rep. Velazquez (D-NY) and Rep. Ellison (D-MN) — are asking colleagues to co-sponsor their legislation. Strong bi-partisan support will go a long way towards helping the ban become reality.

Ask your Representative to sign on, today.

Of course, Congress shouldn’t have to act on this issue at all. But back in March, the newly appointed Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scott Pruitt, rejected recommendations of his agency’s own scientists and blocked a planned ban of this widely used, neurotoxic insecticide.

Pediatricians described Pruitt’s decision as “deeply alarming,” and PAN and our partner groups called the agency to task for so clearly putting Dow Chemical’s bottom line ahead of science, workers and kids. We also immediately took EPA back to court.

Now Congress is stepping up where Scott Pruitt failed.

Thirty-one House members have already signed on to co-sponsor the bill — but many more are needed. Ask your Representative to add their name.

Scientists have known for more than a decade that this chemical damages children’s developing brains — reducing IQs, changing brain architecture and increasing risk of learning disabilities and disorders.

Finally, after years of lawsuits and public pressure, EPA was poised to follow the science and withdraw all uses of this chemical in food production. That is, until Scott Pruitt took the reins.

Congress must now do the job Pruitt will not. Please ask your Representative to sign on to HR 3380 and support a chlorpyrifos ban.

Thanks for all you do.
