Help Build a Monument to Fort McMurray Workers

Help Build a Monument to Fort McMurray Workers r1 ...
Love ‘em or hate’em, the Athabasca oilsands marked their 50th anniversary at the end of September.  Whatever your thoughts on the oilsands, as trade unionists we fight like hell for the living but we also need to take time to remember the dead.

The Building Trades unions whose members built and rebuilt Fort McMurray are looking to remember the workers who died and were injured as well as those who endured long periods of isolation away from their families over those 50 years.

UA Local 488 is leading the charge to get a monument built.  They need your support.  Click HERE to send a message supporting the monument project to the region’s politicians in Ottawa and Edmonton.

In just a few seconds you can move this project closer to success.  Just go HERE.

We’d like to reward you somehow for supporting Local 488’s memorial project.  So take a few hours and recharge your union batteries with some of the fine films offered by CLiFF (Canadian Labour International Film Festival).

CLiFF not only directly runs showings of the films selected for this year but it provides volunteers across the country with a ‘film fest in a box’.  So the chances are good that CLiFF is coming to your neck of the woods.

For this year’s line-up and where and when CLiFF is appearing in your area see the CLiFF website HERE.

One last thing.  Just a reminder that Winnipeg-based retailer Nygard is still refusing to accept responsiibility for the wages and severance owed to the Cambodian women who until recently were making the clothes Nygard sells.  On behalf of those women tell Nygard to come up with what it owes by clicking HERE.

OK.  Three items in one message is enough.  Thanks for taking the time to respond to these appeals and for forwarding this message on to all your union contacts.

In Solidarity,

Derek Blackadder
