10 year old at risk of deportation

r1 ...

Last month, an undocumented ten-year-old girl with cerebral palsy was stopped by U.S. Border Patrol en route to a hospital for emergency surgery. The girl, Rosa Maria Hernandez, was ultimately allowed to undergo surgery but taken immediately afterwards to a detention centre, 150 miles away from her family. She has since been released, but remains at risk of deportation.

I’m a 20-year-old Canadian and I have cerebral palsy too. When I heard the news about Rosa Maria, my heart went out to her. I knew I couldn’t do much from afar, so I started a petition to prevent her deportation. Will you sign it?

As a young adult with cerebral palsy, I am mobile, enrolled in university, and an active member of my community. But life with cerebral palsy is very different when you are just a child, you lack full mobility and are too young to advocate for your needs. I can’t imagine what I would do if I were in Rosa Maria’s situation right now – going from one unfamiliar environment to the next, often without family by her side.

Rosa Maria needs access to adequate health care, the love and care of adults who can advocate for her needs, and stability. Please, sign my petition to prevent Rosa Maria from undergoing another traumatic experience – deportation.

Being alone with cerebral palsy is scary enough when you’re a kid. But being completely on your own in a detention centre, away from family, and right after surgery is truly unfathomable. Rosa Maria began showing signs of social withdrawal during her time in detention, and even had difficulty keeping up an appetite. What she needs now is rest, care, and a place where she feels at home.

This isn’t about immigration. It’s not about health care. It’s about the best interests of a suffering child, who has already been through more trauma than any child should have to experience – particularly one with a disability. Please, do what is right today and sign this petition to prevent Rosa Maria’s deportation, and give her the chance to heal.

Thank you for being an advocate,
