Don’t let corporations control even more of food & farming

Dear PAOV,

Higher prices and lack of competition aren’t good for farmers, or eaters. But a merger between Monsanto and Bayer is poised to allow these multinational pesticide and biotech corporations even more control over our food and farming system.

The Dow and DuPont merger recently went through, further concentrating corporate power over how our food is grown. But there’s still time to block the process for Monsanto and Bayer. We hear the Department of Justice (DoJ) Antitrust Division will listen closely to concerns about market consolidation — especially from farmers.

Speak up! Approval for these deals could come anytime and the DoJ needs to hear from all of us now.

Monsanto is already the largest seed corporation in the world. And it’s the fifth largest pesticide company, manufacturing hazardous chemicals to accompany its genetically engineered seed lines.

Bayer comes in as the second largest pesticide corporation, with widely used bee-harming neonics a key part of its portfolio, and the ranks seventh in the seed market.

A merger between these already-monolithic corporations raises serious antitrust concerns, including increased costs and reduced choices for farmers. And in farming states like Iowa, where one in five jobs is connected to agriculture, higher seed prices and increased pesticide resistance would be catastrophic

Stand up for farmers! Contact the DoJ today and share your concerns.

A Monsanto/Bayer merger would also mean a doubling-down on a failing approach to agriculture that has given us superweeds, superbugs and dramatic increases in the use of hazardous chemical cocktails.

Time to speak up now! Blocking this mega-merger would stop further corporate control of the food we grow and eat.

Thank you for keeping the spotlight on this important issue.
