Dear PAOV,
What a year it’s been. In 2017, the movement for climate justice and Indigenous rights stopped the largest tar sands pipeline ever proposed -- Energy East. This was beautiful news to receive in the middle of a rough year. And while my team joined our friends across the country in taking a moment to celebrate, the victory against Energy East was also a reminder that we need to double down against tar sands expansion in all its unjust forms.
To do that, we’re counting on support from people like you, PAOV. Please consider donating to 350.org so we can continue fighting dirty tar sands expansion in 2018.
To say the least, this was a tough year. The climate crisis has put our world on the... brink of a global state of emergency. The devastation has been impossible to ignore. We’ve seen it here in Canada. Vicious wildfires raged through western provinces in July and August. And, scientists reported a 1000% increase in glacier loss in the Arctic as well as a massive thawing of permafrost which is devastating for Indigenous peoples and wildlife up north.
And in the face of these repeated disasters, there has been no shortage of disappointing decisions by our politicians. Prime Minister Trudeau and his government have stood by the decision to approve the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline -- showing us all that they would rather defend the interests of Big Oil than stand up for communities. Just last week, the National Energy Board, responsible for regulating energy projects, gave Kinder Morgan the power to override local permits and bulldoze ahead with its dangerous pipeline project.
But I can tell you that all the bad news I’ve received this year has only fuelled my determination to work with my team here in Canada to double down in the fight to stop climate change. Can you make a donation to support our work in 2018?
While last year was full of disasters -- there were also reminders that what we’re doing is working:
- The Energy East pipeline was abandoned by TransCanada because the federal government announced a climate review for the project after years of people like you and me demanding a proper consideration of climate impacts in the review of tar sands pipelines;
- We also worked with community members to ensure that Canada’s most iconic cultural institution, the Museum of History, will no longer receive donations from dirty oil lobbyists;
- And we saw people power over power the Kinder Morgan pipeline when we stopped construction on the pipeline’s marine terminal this Fall through the Kinder Morgan flotilla action.
In 2018, we hope to continue building on these wins by working with First Nations and local communities on the ground in BC to hold a wall of resistance to Kinder Morgan. We will also work with our First Nations partners to stop the largest open-pit tar sands mine ever proposed -- Teck Frontier.
We can only keep doing this work with support from our community. Please make a donation to our work today.
In respect and peace,
Clayton Thomas-Müller
