Update on Preclearance Bill C-23
Dear friends and supporters,
You should be alarmed about last week's passage of Preclearance Bill C-23 in Senate. The bill will give extraordinary new powers to US customs and border agents in Canada at customs preclearance sites across the country.
Read our reaction to the passage of Preclearance Bill C-23.
Since Bill C-23 was introduced last December, we have testified before Parliament that the expansion of powers for American border guards are likely unconstitutional. You stood by us and sent over 6600 emails to Senators calling on them to halt this bill.
But with the passage of Bill C-23, US guards will now be able to detain and even perform strip searches on Canadians in certain circumstances - powers that should never be given to them under any circumstances.
