What's In a Name?
Community Dialogue on Joseph Trutch

Tuesday, January 16 at 7:00 - 8:30 PM
Cook Street Village Activity Centre
380 Cook Street in Lekwungen Territory

IS IT TIME TO CHANGE THE NAME OF TRUTCH STREET?

Join us for a community dialogue on the power of place naming and recent calls to rename Trutch Street in the Fairfield neighbourhood of Victoria. Named in honour of Joseph Trutch, British Columbia’s first Lieutenant Governor and Chief Commissioner of Land and Works, Trutch Street commemorates a historical figure who played a leading role in dramatically reducing the size of First Nations reserve lands during the nineteenth century.

Given Trutch’s key role in the dispossession of indigenous peoples, the University of Victoria recently decided to remove Trutch’s name from a building on its campus. This has sparked a renewed interest in calling upon the City of Victoria to rename Trutch Street as a step toward decolonization and reconciliation. Join the discussion and help examine critical questions about how the honorific commemoration of Trutch in the city’s streetscape relates to contemporary efforts at reconciliation.

Featuring:
Joan Morris, Elder, Songhees Nation
George Abbott, former Education Minister, UVic Political Science doctoral candidate
Lisa Schnitzler, UVic undergraduate student
Reuben Rose-Redwood, chair, UVic Committee for Urban Studies

All welcome for this free event. Sponsors: UVic Committee for Urban Studies, Critical Geographies Research Lab
