UNIFOR-CLC SPLIT DEMANDS UNITY FROM BELOW

Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, has left the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). Unifor’s website says the decision was made by its National Executive Board on January 16. In a letter to CLC President Hassan Yussuff dated January 17, Unifor President Jerry Dias states that Unifor’s Executive Board has voted to cease affiliation to the CLC “immediately.”
This will have reverberations across the entire labour movement, and the Unifor membership has had no say in the decision. Read more!
HANDS OFF OUR TIPS!

The minimum wage increase across Ontario has sparked a series of reactionary cutbacks from bosses. One of the many ways that employers have managed to download the cost of the minimum wage increase onto the backs of workers is through tip pools.
Last week, a public debate took place in Ottawa where the owner of Clocktower Brew Pub asserted his right to take a higher percentage of servers’ tips using this process. Read more!
ALL LABOUR HAS DIGNITY: KING'S FINAL FIGHT
On February 1 1968, two Memphis Tennessee sanitation workers were crushed to death in a malfunctioning garbage truck. Anger boiled over and the workforce of 1,300, all black men, went on strike on February 12. Led by shopfloor union organizers, the strike was for improved work conditions, better wages, and union recognition from the City of Memphis. Read more!
THE PEOPLE VS. TIM HORTON'S, ROUND ONE

The second week of Ontario’s minimum wage hike brought with it large pickets against Tim Hortons bosses and owners across the province. Coordinated actions were held province-wide in Cobourg, Dundas, Guelph, London, Peterborough, Ottawa, Windsor, and nine locations in Toronto. Read more!
