Federal government appeals solitary confinement victory
Dear friends and supporters,
On Friday, February 16, 2018, the federal government appealed last month's historic judgment that ordered an end to indefinite solitary confinement in prisons across Canada.
Our sweeping victory last month held that our current solitary confinement laws were unconstitutional.
They permit prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement, deprive inmates of the right to counsel at segregation review hearings, and discriminate against Indigenous, mentally ill, and disabled prisoners
Read our reaction to the appeal.
By appealing, the government shows its intention to fight to save a system that breaks the law and makes our society less equitable.
Because of the government’s actions, prisoners will continue to spend weeks, months, and even years in small cells without meaningful human contact. They will continue to suffer from severe physical and psychological harm because of that isolation - some may be driven to end their lives there.
Fight with us to end the abuse of long-term solitary confinement by donating today.
We will not turn away from these realities, nor will Canadians. We will fight this appeal.
In the coming weeks, we will need your support to fight this appeal - so stay tuned with more to come.
Thank you for standing with us for justice,
Caily DiPuma
Acting Litigation Director
