Algeria: stop the assault on independent unions!
Thousands of you responded to a joint campaign by the IUF and international unions initiated last December in response to intensifying government attacks on independent trade unions in Algeria. The government however has so far not changed course. Independent trade union members and leaders continue to face legal persecution, including sentences and fines for having publicized incidents of sexual harassment. The government has shown its contempt for international human rights standards by refusing to let a planned mission to the country by the United Nations' ILO go forward which included meetings with the independent unions. The mission was recommended by the ILO's Committee on Application of Standards in June 2017, after Algeria came under examination by the committee for repeated breaches of ILO Convention 87 on freedom of association.
The IUF, IndustriALL, PSI and the ITUC have initiated a new petition campaign on change.org calling on the government to stop violating trade union rights - CLICK HERE to sign the petition!
