Friends,
When I woke up yesterday, I did what I usually do these days. Slowly open my eyes, brew a pot of coffee, turn on the radio and pick up my phone to see the day’s news on the Kinder Morgan fight.
What I came across yesterday was astounding– a story in the National Observer that may well be the most important thing written about Kinder Morgan, or frankly, any fossil fuel project in Canada. The article, written by former Postmedia reporter Mike DeSouza, is a detailed investigation into Justin Trudeau’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline that lays out the facts and makes a clear case that Trudeau’s review and approval of the pipeline was rigged from the very start.
The investigative article breaks down, in detail, how the federal government ignored Indigenous voices, disregarded public input, and sped up the review at the behest of Kinder Morgan. Perhaps most damningly, it explains how, during the Kinder Morgan review, while Trudeau and his cabinet were still in the process of consulting communities and First Nations, they had already instructed public servants to give their cabinet a “basis to say ‘yes’” to the pipeline.
This is shocking, but I can’t say it’s surprising. Clearly, the Trudeau government thinks that they can hinge their entire political legacy on building the Kinder Morgan pipeline. We need to show them that’s the wrong bet. Join us in an unprecedented national campaign to show the Trudeau government that bulldozing ahead with Kinder Morgan will cost them politically.
We’ve known that from the day Justin Trudeau took office, he’s been under relentless pressure from Big Oil. Now we know for certain that when he faced a choice between Indigenous rights and climate action on one hand, and pandering to Big Oil billionaires on the other, he chose the billionaires.
Trudeau and his government made the wrong choice and we need to make sure they know it. We need to send them a clear message before they decide to spend billions of public dollars to bail out Kinder Morgan -- as they’ve already suggested they will do in order to make sure that the Kinder Morgan pipeline is built.
People from coast to coast are rising up to show the Liberal government just how much support they will lose if they use billions of tax dollars to bail out Kinder Morgan. Find an action near you or organize one in your community.
In the last 24 hours, the Prime Minister and his cabinet have been confronted non-stop with questions about the illegitimacy of the Kinder Morgan review -- from the public, in the House of Commons, and by the media. Most recently, the leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, has called on the Prime Minister to release his government’s secret records of communication from the Kinder Morgan review.
We’re clearly approaching the brink of a monumental moment in the Kinder Morgan fight -- as each day passes, the Liberal government comes face to face with more reasons to regret their approval of the project. This is the moment to lean in and make some noise. Let’s go in for the win and stop this pipeline once and for all.
Onwards,
Cam
PS - As you know, nearly 200 people have been arrested at the gates of the Kinder Morgan tanker facility on Burnaby Mountain and now Kinder Morgan has pushed for these individual to face charges of criminal contempt for their actions. Against the massive scale of resources that Big Oil companies have access to when taking this fight to the courts, ensuring these individuals are able to mount a fair defence of their actions is one more way we can promote climate justice as a movement. If you’re able, could you pitch in to support their legal defence fund?
