We’re going to Kinder Morgan's shareholder meeting in less than two weeks with a powerful shareholder resolution on climate and Indigenous rights that could help stop the Trans Mountain project.
Your pension or mutual fund could help stop this dangerous project -- and it only takes a few seconds to send an email. Will you send a message to your fund manager now to vote for our proposal?
A,
We may be able to help stop one of Canada’s most notorious extreme energy projects in the next couple of weeks.
On May 9th, a powerful delegation of Indigenous leaders are heading to Kinder Morgan's annual meeting in Houston, Texas... with a hard-hitting shareholder proposal on Indigenous rights and climate change.
The largest investment advisory firm in the world just recommended shareholders vote FOR our proposal — meaning we could actually win this! And now, we need your help to make sure it passes.
If you have a 401(k), pension or mutual fund, or have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Québec Pension Plan (QPP), a retirement savings plan, you almost certainly hold shares indirectly in Kinder Morgan. That gives you a key role in making sure major investors vote for our proposal.
Investors are already incredibly shaky about Trans Mountain. The company has already suspended all non-essential spending on the project. And just this week, reports have emerged that the approvals process for the project may have been rigged by the Canadian government. Right now, strong support for this proposal presented by Indigenous leaders could actually help stop this project.
Thanks to Indigenous-led resistance, the future of the $7.4 billion Trans Mountain Project is hanging in the balance right now. And if we get a strong vote at the AGM, it will prove to Kinder Morgan's investors just how risky this project is. That is why it is so critical to write to your fund managers right now.
The New York State Pension Fund's motion about environmental responsibility and transparency is powerful and game-changing. And it's just been endorsed by Institutional Shareholder Services, the largest and most influential proxy advisory firm in the world. And thanks to the help of SumOfUs members, we’re helping send a powerful delegation of Indigenous leaders right to Houston, Texas to deliver the proposal.
Fund managers listen to their clients. Last year SumOfUs members got their fund managers to vote for a proposal asking Exxon to report on climate change - and it passed!
And last April, 42% of shareholders agreed with our proposal that the Royal Bank of Canada should be more transparent about its lobbying. And, after 3,500 of you contacted your pension funds, our groundbreaking proposal at oil giant Suncor received 40% of the vote, and forced the company to begin disclosing its lobbying expenses.
Most shareholders and financial advisors cast their ballots before the AGM -- that means we need to act now before they cast their ballots.
We are on the right track with Kinder Morgan. Indigenous-led resistance is working. Years of work, led by Indigenous activists, is finally paying off. Now is the critical moment to put the final nail in the coffin of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline project.
With less than 2 weeks before the AGM, please ask your fund to vote FOR our proposal.
Thanks for all that you do,
Emma, Amelia, Eoin and the team at SumOfUs
