How Mexicos Drug War Really Looks

A portrait shows a woman overcome with grief and horror. She is mourning those she lost when, in 2009, a drug gang in Mexico murdered 19 young people at a treatment center. Her agony is visceral, and it’s a feeling countless Mexicans personally understand. This work of art—which can be seen, along with many others, at the Museum of Drug Policy, a pop-up exhibition that opened this week in Mexico City—asks us to look at the true costs of drug control. As a new report from the Open Society Justice initiative and eight Mexican partner groups shows, these costs don’t only hurt people; they also harm political and justice systems. A new vision is badly needed. The old ways of thinking have already cost too much.
