I'm worried

OpenMedia r1

My name is Alana Schultz, and I'm in charge of fundraising at OpenMedia.

You don't usually get emails from me, but I'm writing you today because we're facing a significant funding shortfall this month -- and that's a big problem.

As a non-profit organization, we set a fundraising target each month. If we don't hit that target, then eventually, we simply have to cut back on our work – either reduce staff time on crucial projects or spend less on ads and campaigns. I wish that wasn't true, but it's just reality.

And this fundraising shortfall is happening at the worst possible time. We're facing major attacks on our digital rights.

Bell will stop at nothing to gain unprecedented powers for Canada-wide website blocking. The Cambridge Analytica scandal confirmed our worst fears about how our personal data can be used against us, while Internet service prices are soaring at a rate 5 times that of inflation.

That's why, in this time of maximum danger for the Internet, we're counting on your help. Will you chip in to help close this month's fundraising shortfall by end of the day?

Let me share with you a little inside peek into how we work as an organization.

Most of the money that funds our work comes from regular folks like you chipping in whatever you can. With thousands of people like you helping out, we can stand up to our opposition's deep-pockets and endless spending on advertisements and powerful lobbyists.

Our monthly goal for online fundraising is usually about $30,000. Since we don't have big staff or a ton of overhead, that's enough to keep our lean team going. More importantly, by using the most cutting edge campaign strategies and technology, it's enough to stand up to the big corporations and snooping politicians and win.

But if we don't close the fundraising gap, then our executive director, Laura Tribe, will be forced to cut back somewhere -- and I don't even want to think about that.

Maybe we won't be able to launch a key campaign to stop our government from handing dangerous new cyber powers to Canada's spy agencies. Or maybe we'll have to cut our ad budget for exposing Big Telecom's next attempt to destroy Canadian Net Neutrality. Or perhaps we won't be able to organize an action we'd planned to stop NAFTA's worst anti-consumer provisions.

We can't let that happen, and as OpenMedia's fundraising director, I'm counting on you to make sure that together we don't fall short.

Will you chip in to help hit our monthly fundraising goal by midnight tonight?

Thank you for supporting our work.
