Just a quick note that will interest those of you who are looking for a staff position with a union. The Society of United Professionals, IFPTE Local 160, is looking for a staff director for its office in Toronto. They have asked us to get the word out and so below is the posting for the position.

The Society of United Professionals is a local of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers. Our union represents a variety of professional staff, primarily in support of electrical generation and distribution in Ontario and expanding into other sectors of professional workers. We currently represent approximately 8,000 members. We are supported in that representation by many active full and part time officers and 28 full time staff members employed in a variety of capacities.

We are currently searching for a dynamic, progressive leader who can fulfill the role of Staff Director. This important position serves as a non-voting member of the Executive Committee, Executive Board and Council and as a part of that team develops and delivers the leadership and direction of the Union. The position also provides advice and assistance respecting the integration of staff resources into the strategic and operational objectives of the Society and has some financial and budget responsibility. Policies and procedures applicable to staff are developed in cooperation with the Executive team and implemented by this position. This managerial position has full authority over all staff and subordinate supervisors and makes decisions regarding organization of work, management and deployment. Our Staff belong to a union and the Staff Director is integral to the negotiation, operation and interpretation of the collective agreement.

This is a senior position and our Staff Director needs the skills and experience demonstrated by education at the bachelor level and at least 8 years of experience in human resources or labour relations management in a union environment. Equivalence considered. The successful applicant should have experience in conflict resolution, formal negotiation and superior demonstrated abilities to recognize and deal with ongoing power and political relationships, both inside and external to our union.

This position works Monday to Friday with the expectation of some weekend and evening work, with occasional overnight travel.
