International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW)

General Description:

Under the direction of the General Vice President for Canada, provides research assistance to Canadian IAM staff, locals and districts on economics, collective bargaining, pensions, legislative and regulatory issues, politics and other issues, and represents the IAM to affiliated organizations and the public. This is a permanent position in a Unionized work environment, based in Toronto at our Canadian Offices

  1. Provide support for collective bargaining by compiling and analyzing wage, benefit, and financial information for Staff, locals and districts.
  2. Provide support on pension issues for staff and locals.
  3. Provide support for the union’s organizing activities.
  4. Prepare and present policy positions, briefs and submissions to government on issues relevant to the union.
  5. Participate in the planning, preparation, and implementation of political action programs of the IAM and affiliated organizations.
  6. Prepare articles on various issues for the IAM Journal and website.
  7. Prepare and present training on pensions and other issues.
  8. Prepare and present materials for IAM staff and industry conferences.
  9. Represent the IAM on various Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) committees and working groups.
  10. Effectively communicate in both written reports and oral presentations, paying close attention attention to detail.

  1. Ability to communicate clearly and articulately in both English and French.
  2. Combination of post-secondary education, training and experience as required for necessary research and analysis.
  3. Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  4. Understanding of, and commitment to, collective bargaining, unions and social justice issues.
  5. Ability to work independently.
  6. Proficiency with computer software –Microsoft Office apps – and online research tools.
  7. Ability to travel, and to work weekends and holidays as required.
