This is an enormous problem.
If you were to line up those 500 million straws end-to-end, they would circle the earth 2.5 times. That's just the amount of straws thrown out in one day, by one country.
Plastic drinking straws are often not recyclable due to their size. As a result, billions of them end up in landfills and oceans each year.
The majority of plastic straws used are made from a petroleum based plastic called polypropylene. Making 1000 kg of polypropylene 3530 kg of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
This is why we need to tell Starbucks to stop using non-biodegradable drinking straws. We need to tell them that to design and use fully biodegradable straws.
Starbucks is already investing $10 million into designing a fully recyclable and compostable coffee cup, so why stop there? Why not take it a step further and design compostable drinking straws as well?
Sign this petition to get Starbucks to design new biodegradable drinking straws.
