Sign the petition In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. In Ontario alone, an estimated 650,000 families are dealing with the unique challenges and struggles of raising children and youth with mental illness. Suicide is currently the leading cause of non-accidental death among children and youth in Ontario, claiming the lives of children and youth more than any physical illness.

There is still a stigma surrounding mental illness. For example, 49% of people who feel as though they have suffered from depression or anxiety have never gone to see a doctor about this problem. 42% of Canadians were unsure whether they would socialize with a friend who has a mental illness and 55% of Canadians said they would be unlikely to enter a spousal relationship with someone who has a mental illness.

I feel that having a mandatory course in high school in mental health will help to relieve this stigma around mental illness. Also adolescents will learn more about issues they may be dealing with or know someone who is dealing with it. This will also help them to find different resources or learn of places to get help. r0 · /> · Privacy policy
