They're trying to censor us

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

When big corporate publishers in the EU proposed... a Link Tax and censorship machines to block link-sharing on the Internet, OpenMedia fought back with our Save the Link campaign.

But now a corporation has issued a “takedown notice,” using overreaching U.S. copyright rules to demand that our Save the Link campaign website be blocked from Google search results.1 Other free-speech advocates, including MEP Julia Reda, were targeted with similar censorship orders.2

That's right—they're trying to censor our efforts to stop censorship.

This is one of the most disturbing and dangerous attempts we've seen by corporations to silence activism online. Imagine how bad it will be if similar rules are put into place here in Canada.

We're fighting back, but this is just a taste of what we're up against in the coming month, as lobbyists increase their efforts to block your voices from reaching MEPs. We absolutely MUST stop the EU link tax. Will you make a donation to help fight back?

DONATE

In recent weeks, dozens of free-speech advocates, journalists, legal academics, and other experts have been the target of similar harassing takedown notices—all aimed at shutting down debate about free speech online.

The order targeting OpenMedia falsely claims that our campaign website violates the copyright of Australian musician Gamble Breaux. In fact, our website contains no references to her or her music at all—this is simply bullying aimed at blocking websites that are standing up to harassment, like fraudulent takedown requests.

It's outrageous: Corporations are literally trying to censor our anti-censorship campaign.

Worse yet, if the EU link-tax bill passes, the ability of corporations to silence us will increase exponentially.

The final European Commission vote on the link tax is expected to happen in less than a month. Will you chip in to help make sure we have the resources to defend ourselves legally and keep up the fight to stop the EU's awful link-tax legislation?

Yes, I'll chip in to help defend OpenMedia and save the link!

Yours for the free and open Internet,

Laura, and the rest of the OpenMedia team
