What a year we’re having. It doesn’t matter which way you turn, in 2018 corporations have been using their money and might to trample over communities, democracy, and our planet.
From Facebook’s blatant disregard for our privacy and our democracy. To Bayer’s court battle to keep profiting from bee-killing pesticides.
From Microsoft coining it in off the back of the most heinous treatment of migrants in the US. To PepsiCo still guzzling palm oil at the expense of the last remaining orangutans.
It would be easy to feel totally despondent. But the thing that gives me hope, A, is you. As a SumOfUs member you’re part of a community of millions of people fighting back against the worst corporate nonsense.
But I have to be honest with you. We’re having a bit of a difficult time at SumOfUs because we haven’t met our fundraising targets for a few months now.
We’re in the process of making some critical decisions on what campaigns we can and can’t fund.

We’re just over halfway into the year but already amazing members like you have made waves in taking on corporate power:
- You worked with our partners to protect the bees from chemical giant Bayer, and got us an historic, EU-wide ban against three major, bee-killing pesticides
- You also helped raise a whopping $50,000 to help the small town of Osceola, in the US state of Michigan to fight off a lawsuit from Nestlé, which is sucking millions of litres of water from the community
- You helped crash several huge annual shareholder meetings, confronting the CEOs of supermarket giants, oil pipeline companies, and Facebook. You hit them where it hurts most -- their investors
- So many of you helped resist Trump’s corporate-backed agenda when he turned up in the UK just a few weeks ago
- And much more!
The truth is we don’t have enough money right now to continue this level of important campaigning, let alone respond to new opportunities that may crop up.
If we continue this way, we’ll have to cut back one thing or another, and we really don’t want to have to do that.
That’s unless we can count on the support of members like you today, A.

Here’s what’s in store for the rest of the year and what your support will help make happen:
- We need to defend the EU’s historic ban against three key bee-killing pesticides against Bayer
- We’re taking on tech companies like Microsoft to stop them helping the U.S. Government wage its war against immigrants and refugees
- We’re fighting Nestlé to stop it from sucking communities dry in Canada and the U.S., and doing similar work in Australia
- We’re holding PepsiCo to account for its ties to massive-scale deforestation in Indonesia
We have less than 40 members of staff and our costs aren’t high. We’re lean but we’re effective.
We’re 100% independent. We take no money from government or corporations -- we run almost entirely on donations from the SumOfUs community. We wouldn’t have it any other way -- because this lets us to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.
