Dear friends and supporters,
Last week, the BCCLA launched our online petition calling for an end to discrimination in policing and the response has been incredible.
So far, more than 850 people have called on the BC government to develop policies to end racial bias in policing including ending the practice of street checks known as “carding.”
Our goal is to secure 2,500 signatures by September 25th to show the BC government that the public demands an end to police discrimination now.
Will you join us by taking action today?
Take Action NowOur efforts to confront the structural racism that results in police bias are rooted in the lived experience of community members across BC. We have the data to support ten years of discrimination by the Vancouver Police Department, but we’ve also heard these stories for years coming from across the Province.
In the BCCLA’s 2011 report Small Town Justice, we compiled stories from dozens of people in rural BC who had experienced negative police interactions. One community member, an Indigenous woman, reported that:
Her son and best friends are stopped every time, literally every time, they go downtown after dark. She described them as having darker skin, which she believed motivated the increased police attention. Attendees who were white agreed that their children were not treated this way.
To this day, our Community Lawyer Dylan Mazur continues to hear accounts of similar experiences when he visits communities all over Rural and Northern BC.
Join us in calling on the BC government to end the over-policing and under-protection of racialized communities in BC.
