We received such an overwhelming positive response to this message last week (45 new members!), but we know many of you are busy and don't get to read every e-mail that lands in your cluttered inbox — so we're sending it one more time with a couple of exciting updates!
Have you ever been told that you can’t do something that your heart is set on doing?
Well, I sure have. I’ve heard it all: you can’t run a thriving non-profit news outlet in Canada; you can’t successfully change your name and launch a brand-new website; you can’t convince readers to pay for journalism these days.
People love to tell you what you can’t do, don’t they? But, if you’re anything like me, there’s something about being told you can’t do something that makes you all the more determined to do it.
That’s what ran through my mind last week when I learned that just four months after launching, The Narwhal has been named as a finalist for six Canadian Online Publishing Awards. Yes, six — including best publication, best news website and best investigative article.
Will you join us in proving the naysayers wrong by becoming a monthly member of The Narwhal today?
Our little non-profit publication — started by two young women with a dream — is up against Maclean’s for best news website in the country.
Thank you to each and every one of you for making the dream of The Narwhal a reality.
There are a lot of days when I’m just in the trenches, trying to make budgets add up and headlines sing, hoping against hope that this audacious dream is going to work out. And then there are days like this — days that make a believer out of me.
Let’s face it: there are lots of things to be disenchanted about in the world right now, but I like to think our ability to build a bold, independent media outlet is truly a bright light amongst it all.
We are four days away from the end of our fiscal year and need just five more members to make the numbers work. Will you stand with us?
Nearly a year ago, six months before The Narwhal came into being, I sent my co-founder Carol this card.
“We are an impossibility in an impossible universe.”It has never struck me as more true than today. In a news landscape that’s shedding jobs, losing touch with its responsibility to readers and publishing less hard-hitting journalism, at The Narwhal we’re hiring reporters and investing in in-depth journalism — all without accepting a cent from advertisers.
This is all made possible because people like you have taken a stand. If you believe in the power of independent journalism, please join us today by giving whatever you can.
I spent a weekend at a festival recently talking to hundreds of people about independent media. It’s clear Canadians from all walks of life are craving a different kind of journalism — journalism that seeks solutions, not problems, journalism that brings people together instead of driving us apart.
Join us in creating a new kind of media by signing up to give $5, $10 or $20 a month today.
With gratitude,
Emma Gilchrist
Co-founder of The Narwhal
P.S. I hear time and time again that people want to step up and support our work financially, but are so busy that sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I just tested our donation form and it takes about three minutes to complete. Please take those three minutes today to stand up for what you believe in and be part of the future of journalism.
P.P.S. We know that sometimes monthly donations don't work for people. If you'd prefer to make a one-time gift, you can do so here.
