What Wall Street Doesn’t Want You to Know About Hospital Emergency Rooms
Eileen Appelbaum and Rosemary Batt
Doctor Ming Lin is the first emergency room doctor to be fired for going public with his concerns about poor hospital emergency room safety practices and shortages of medical supplies and protective gear for health workers. He won’t be the last.
Like many hospitals in the US, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham Washington, where Ming Lin worked for the past 17 years as an emergency room doctor, has outsourced the management and staffing of its emergency room. So, Lin works on-site at the hospital’s ER, but he is employed by a physician staffing firm that runs the ER. These staffing firms are often behind the surprise medical bills for ER services that patients receive after their insurance company has paid the hospital and doctors, but not the excessive out-of-network charges billed by these outside staffing firms.
About a third of hospital emergency rooms are staffed by doctors on the payrolls of two physician staffing...

A, did you see this?
The cure for coronavirus could be held hostage by Gilead. The pharma giant owns the patent for remdesivir, a drug that could be the treatment the world is waiting for.
But Gilead is infamous for selling life-saving drugs at eye-watering rates that individuals and governments can’t afford. And if we let it hog this patent, it likely won’t be able to produce enough remdesivir to meet global demand.
A, we can’t let Gilead get away with this -- so we’re taking this to the skies.
Your donation today will pay for a plane to fly right over Gilead San Francisco HQ’s with a bold message for its CEO: “Stop trying to make a profit from the coronavirus!”
Can you chip in to get this off the ground?

Open Letter to Prime Minister Trudeau: Order the Use of the GM Oshawa Plant for Essential Medical Production
Green Jobs Oshawa
We call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to issue an immediate order for the production of essential medical equipment and supplies in the Oshawa GM complex and related parts supplier facilities. This should be the first step toward establishing a publicly owned manufacturing centre that could supply strategically necessary goods in times of crisis.
* The GM manufacturing complex has 10 million square feet -- 90 per cent of it unused.
* Other supplier companies in the Oshawa area are also empty as a result of GM’s decision to end vehicle assembly in Oshawa.
* Thousands of highly skilled GM and supplier workers are unemployed as a result of GM’s actions, and would be eager to work on this crucially needed production.
We are facing a crisis. "Our hospital members report that supplies are being rationed. In long-term care and home care these protections are especially scarce. We are asking for safety...

Capitalism, Coronavirus and the Road to Extinction
Eren Duzgun
The Godzilla-like image of the virus Covid-19 has been haunting the world. Not only has the virus unraveled nightmarish possibilities leading to the extinction of millions of people, but it has also served as a quintessential case revealing the structural contradictions of and existential threats posed by capitalism on a global scale.
Several researchers agree that Covid-19 is quite an unprecedented virus. Unlike seasonal influenza, Covid-19 is ten times deadlier, and we have yet to develop a medical remedy or herd immunity to slow it down; the best estimates for the development of a vaccine are at least three to six months away.
The virus’s mortality rate seems much lower than earlier pandemics (such as Ebola [1994], Avian flu [1997], SARS [2002], MERS [2012]); yet the manner in which Covid-19 spreads, i.e., its mode of infectivity, seems radically different. Unlike earlier pandemics, the virus has proved infectious even before carriers display any symptoms, which renders it often undetectable during the 14-day incubation period.

COVID-19 and the Future of Public Transit
Whether we are frontline workers or relying on transit to get our groceries, we need public transit to keep us moving. But with ridership falling, some transit agencies are cutting back on service because they depend on fares for operating funding.
This online panel looks at what public transit agencies should be doing to keep riders and workers safe during COVID-19, and how a public transit bailout can contribute to the climate action and public services we need.
Featuring:
- Desmond Cole, author of The Skin We’re In
- Carlos Santos, president of ATU Local 113
- Jamaal Myers, Scarborough Transit Action
- Kandeel Imran, student at UofT Scarborough
- James Hutt, The Leap
Moderated by Shelagh Pizey-Allen, TTCriders.

Are Climate and Disaster Victims Violent?:
Klare’s Paean to the American Military
Judith Deutsch
Michael T. Klare’s new book, All Hell Breaking Loose: The Pentagon’s Perspective on Climate Change, is an uncritical paean to the American military. He credits the Pentagon with taking climate science seriously. But he does not question, bring contradictory evidence, or analyze the military’s self-appointed role as global manager of climate-related human disorder. Klare’s work is detailed and comprehensive and merits a close reading. He demonstrates the reach of American military power and its Hobbesian premises about human nature.
In the climate movement, there is some attention to the money spent on the military in comparison to the environment, less focus on the military’s enormous greenhouse gas emissions, and very little consideration of the implications of securitizing climate’s human impacts. I will summarize Klare’s unquestioning presentation of the military point of view, address Klare’s biases and omissions, and conclude with a psychoanalytic perspective on American militarism.
Klare’s is a military institution-centric framing with no regulatory or normative roles for...

Cold Turkey Kenney: Oil-Addiction, Withdrawal and Alternatives in Alberta
Ingo Schmidt
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s messages were often inconsistent, and would certainly fail fact-checking, but they were very persuasive. Until recently. Uncertainties create demand for reassurance, and the reasons for uncertainty are plenty. Financial markets and oil prices are on a roller coaster, putting jobs, pensions, mortgage and student-debt payments at risk. A flood roaring through downtown Calgary, a wildfire blasting Fort McMurray, temperatures rising and precipitation reaching the volatility levels seen until recently only on the trading floors for stocks, derivatives and, of course, oil. In light of acute disasters and climate change more generally, can one really dismiss environmentalists’ claim that burning fossil fuels is the root-cause for these phenomena? If this claim can’t be dismissed, can one hang on to the dreams of oil-based prosperity?
One can, said Jason Kenney. He resigned his seat as MP in Ottawa, united the forces of fossil fuel counter-revolution under the banner of the UCP (United Conservative Party) and pledged to free Alberta from the...

Hi Paov,
I hope you’re doing OK in these unprecedented and challenging times. The global pandemic is hitting all of us in different ways, and so amongst all the bad news, we want to share with you some progress on the campaign to get Rio Tinto to cut all ties with the coal lobby in Australia.
In a report released last week1, Rio Tinto publicly admitted that the Minerals Council of Australia has advocated to undermine the Paris Agreement. Rio Tinto claims to be a climate champion – they support the Paris Agreement and have a net zero emissions by 2050 target2. This is the best opportunity we’ve had yet to call on Rio Tinto to leave the Minerals Council for good. With more public pressure, we could get them over the line.
If Rio Tinto wants to be taken seriously on climate action, it has to leave the Minerals Council. They currently pay 2.1 million US dollar a year to be a...

Green New Deals: Climate Movements and Labour Unions
The 2020 election is the first presidential race with climate at its center. Throughout the Democratic primary, the potential loss of good construction and fossil fuel industry jobs has helped prevent moderate Democratic candidates, including frontrunner Joe Biden, from taking policy positions that would aggressively confront the fossil fuel industry and the climate crisis. Whoever opposes Donald Trump in the general election will face a politics of climate denial built on an empty but alluring promise of job security in the oil, gas, and coal industries.
Jane McAlevey most recent book, A Collective Bargain: Unions, Organizing, and the Fight for Democracy, was published in January. She spoke with Alleen Brown of The Intercept about her work and debates about climate justice.
Alleen Brown (AB): In the Nevada Democratic debate, moderator Chuck Todd quoted a Pennsylvania labour leader who said, "If we end up with a Democratic candidate that supports a fracking ban, I’m going to tell my members that they either don’t vote or vote for the other...

Right now many gig workers are having to choose between their paycheck and their health because companies like Lyft are refusing to pay drivers proper sick leave.
Tell Lyft to provide proper sick pay to its drivers now!
A,
Lyft's reputation is on the line. Its drivers are delivering groceries and taking people to doctor's appointments, exposing themselves to a far greater risk of infection -- yet Lyft bosses refuse to offer them proper sick pay.
Company execs will ONLY pay their drivers sick leave if they test positive for coronavirus or their doctor orders them to quarantine. But you and I know there are almost no tests to be had, and it’s difficult to see a medical professional right now.
So drivers are being forced to choose between their paycheck and their health when taking a single day off means not being able to pay rent or feed their families.
That’s a choice no one should have to...

Covid-19, the Climate Crisis and Lockdown:
An Opportunity to End the War with Nature
Vishwas Satgar
With the coronavirus, we are really trying to mitigate the revenge blow from nature. It’s a moment to be humble and realise our finitude in a wondrous and infinite natural order.
Covid-19 has pushed an already weak and crisis-ridden global economy over the edge. Massive value has been erased from crashing stock market prices. Many commentators are talking about the return of economic conditions similar to the great financial crash of 2007-09. The most powerful countries in the world from China to the US have ground to a halt.
This pathogen, possibly from delicate creatures like a pangolin or a bat, has engendered the worst global pandemic since the Spanish flu (1918-1920), which killed 100-million people. Death rates are going up globally. Right-wing nationalists in Europe and the USA have been confused as this virus has jumped racist border regimes, and infected all populations. Citizens are no longer concerned about their racist messages, but rather about how...

Viruses and Care
Pat Armstrong
It is not surprising that the first recorded deaths from COVID-19 were in nursing homes. But the contributing factors cannot be attributed solely to age.
Long-term residential care shares with other healthcare organizations the negative impacts of neoliberal policies, namely cutbacks in government funding and a failure to keep up with demand for public services, managerial practices that create part-time jobs, contract work that eliminates benefits and irregular hours of work, the downloading of labour to those with the fewest formal credentials, the reduction of staff to a minimum, tight control over workers, and the privatization of ownership as well as the contracting out of work in non-profit and municipal homes. All of these policies and practices have an impact on the conditions of work that are the conditions of care.
However, they have a particular impact within the places most commonly called nursing homes, defined as those that provide 24-hour nursing care and services heavily subsidized by government to make them accessible based on need, not ability...
