Make yards for bees!

Dear Paov,

World Bee Day is May 20 – just in time for bees to emerge from hibernation. Will you take action to create a bee-friendly yard and consider making a donation for the bees?

As bees take flight for the first time since the fall, the energy they desperately need is in your dandelions! Will you stop mowing your lawn until mid-June to leave dandelions for the bees?

Early spring is tricky because many flowers are not yet in bloom. Thankfully, bees have dandelions – and you – to help them. There are also other steps you can take to make a bee-friendly yard:
  1. Download, print and display this sign for your lawn to let your neighbours know why you’re not cutting your lawn
  2. Don’t mow – let your lawn grow free until mid-June
  3. If you must mow, raise the blade (to leave some dandelion flowers)
  4. Put out a bee water bowl with rocks for the bees to land on
  5. Buy plants without bee-killing pesticides (known as neonicotinoids, or “neonics”). These stores carry neonic free plant options:
    • RONA
    • Home Hardware
    • Home Depot
    • Lowe’s

Bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. We need bees and bees need us! Donate now to help fund Wilderness Committee’s bee conservation work.
