Sept. 1-15:
One Wave Gathering begins this Saturday September 1 and continues to September 15th
Pacific Peoples’ Partnership is truly grateful for the incredible community building that took place last year. Throughout the process of planning this year’s One Wave Gathering, we were reminded of the impact The Longhouse Project has had on our community. The connections made, lessons learned, and gifts shared continue to resonate and inspire our work. In this spirit, we would like to invite you to this year’s 11th annual One Wave Gathering.
As guided by our friends at Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation, this year we will remember and honour last year’s incredible anniversary program with a series of events and presentations including The Longhouse Legacy Exhibition. This features an impressionistic digital collage highlighting last years’ events, this has been created by PPP youth intern and artist Austin Willis, who also helped to coordinate the 2017 event. The exhibit will be complemented by information about last year’s project and the participating youth. The gallery will also showcase complementary documentary film screenings, interviews, and short films.
We would be honoured if you and your guests joined us for the opening ceremony tomorrow Saturday September 1st at MediaNet’s new Flux Gallery (821 Fort Street). Doors are open at 4 pm, with official protocol and welcome remarks at 5 pm. The evening will then welcome representatives of Vaka Taumako, to premiere their Polynesian Wayfinding documentary We, the Voyagers. Following the screening will be a discussion of the project with group representatives from Hawai’i. The gallery will run a variety of North and South Pacific documentary screenings, including films from our archives, the Songhees Nation and Gumboot Productions. All will be featured within the Flux Gallery from 12:00pm-5:00pm, Tuesday-Saturday, until September 15th.
Additional One Wave Gathering events include:
September 13: ‘Self-Determination and Self-governance: An Australian perspective’ featuring Michelle Deshong, CEO of the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute, from the Australian National University. PPP is co-presenting this talk along with the Indigenous Studies and CIRCLE at the University of Victoria, in First Peoples House classroom at UVIC (room 160) on Thursday September 13th from 3:00-4:30.
September 15: One Wave Gathering Signature Cultural Celebration, noon to 6 pm at Centennial Square. Presenters include: Lekwungen Dancers, Esquimalt Singers and Dancers, Anela Kahiamoe (Slack Key Guitarist), Kwakiutl Dancers, Pearls of the South Pacific (Polynesian Dance Troupe), hands on family fun activities, artists and NGOs.
Program updates and detailed information can be found on our website and Facebook sites.
One Wave Gathering is produced with the support and permission of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations (Lekwungen peoples), and is about celebrating Pacific Indigenous arts and cultures, building community, and creating solidarity for the stewardship of our shared environment. This year we are working within the theme “Navigating our Shared Waters”. The series of events are produced with the support and engagement of an extensive community, including members of the South Pacific diaspora, plus many local partners. We have held this event annually in Victoria since 2009. All events are free to the public!
Lastly, we need your participation and support to continue to realize such inspirational programs. Please join us in person and / or consider making a donation at: http://pacificpeoplespartnership.org/donate/

April

Sept. 22:
ASL and LSQ Recognition Awareness Day (and Request for Volunteers)
12:00 pm to 2:00 pm
British Columbia Legislative Building at 501 Belleville Street, Victoria, British
Columbia.
The purpose of this event is to present with a strong message that the Deaf community and our
allies request that the federal government to recognize ASL and LSQ as the two national sign
languages of Canada. Sign language is a fundamental aspect of Deaf persons’ human rights in
Canada. The CAD-ASC continues to urge the Government of Canada to recognize our two
national Sign languages - American Sign Language (ASL) and langue des signes québécoise
(LSQ).
CAD-ASC would like Canada to join the other 43-plus countries that have their own Sign
languages legally recognized by their governments. The recognition of Sign languages is a key
human right that promotes equal opportunities for Deaf persons, as clearly shown in the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Article 21. This will
lead to the removal of communication barriers and ensure equal access, which is an important
step towards an Accessible Canada.
The ASL and LSQ Awareness Day will be held the day before the first United Nations’
International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), declared September 23rd established by a
resolution officially adopted at the 72nd United Nations (UN) General Assembly in December
2017. Canada is one of the countries listed as additional sponsors to this UN resolution.
Furthermore, It will coincide with the International Week of the Deaf (IWDeaf) led by World
Federation of the Deaf (WFD).
Finally, as a participant, we would like for you to share part of the vision and support for ASL
and LSQ recognition in Canada and the impacts, the benefits and the advantages it shall have.
We believe that you and individuals with the UVic Social Justice program, by being in
attendance will share and send a positive inclusive message at the event on the importance of the
ASL and LSQ recognition in Canada as our ultimate goal.
Please accept our invitation to participate for our event on Saturday September 22, 2018, at
12:00 p.m. Again, the event ASL and LSQ Recognition Awareness Day will be held between
12:00 pm and 2:00 pm at the British Columbia Legislative Building at 501 Belleville Street in
Victoria, B.C. If your organization and members are interested in helping providing support,
have a booth, or to further promote our event, please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Thank you in advance and full appreciation of your support.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Carroll / Nikki Sellers, ASL and LSQ Awareness Day Chairpersons
