The tar sands are flailing. Now what? r1 ...

Last week, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced a cut in tar sands production. A drop in prices for dirty bitumen has been blamed on lack of pipeline capacity, which has been blamed on — well, us.

Touché.

It's true that, by backing Indigenous Nations in court, we stopped Enbridge. Thanks to the Tsleil Waututh, Squamish, Coldwater and Secwepemc nations, we are stopping the (formerly Kinder Morgan) TransMountain pipeline expansion.

We're all so busy doing what we can in our own lives, putting one foot in front of the other, that sometimes we lose perspective. But when you zoom out and have a look at the big picture, it's astonishing to see how far the RAVEN community has travelled.

By harnessing the power of cutting edge digital organizing tools, we invited dedicated people to donate, fundraise online and organize events. Then you raised over a million bucks (and counting) to fund game-changing court cases that have forced government and industry to take Indigenous rights seriously.

The impact of our collective actions has the tar sands behemoth on the ropes.

Nice shot, David. (Sorry, Goliath).

So: now what?

At this moment in history, Indigenous Nations are on an unprecedented winning streak in the country’s courts. These wins are setting powerful precedents that will reshape our common future. The impact of our work is written on the landscape.

In addition to preventing two major pipelines from transforming the Pacific coast into a fossil fuel export superhighway, we've held off open pit mining in the Tsilhqot'in, sent LNG giant Petronas packing, and pushed back against industrial development of the Yukon's pristine Peel Watershed.

*|FNAME|, we’re fulfilling big dreams. But, now is not the time to let up. It’s time to pull harder, because the gains we’re making are counterbalanced by a ruthless fossil fuel industry that is growing more and more desperate as its climate impact becomes irrefutably clear.

Our plan to ensure that we can step up, reliably and sustainably, for the Nations who are pursuing ambitious litigation to protect wild and sacred places is to invite you into the
Circle of Allies.
Join RAVEN's Circle of Allies

Before the year is out, we are seeking 50 more people to sign up to become monthly donors to RAVEN.

Glancing over the names of our monthly
Circle of Allies donors, here’s some quick math:

Jeremy, who gives $10 a month, has been doing so for 58 months!
Sujatha, one of our original Circle Allies, has given a total of $2725.
The Abrams family donates $125 monthly: a $1500 tax deductible gift.
Natasha has pledged $450 a month to RAVEN — that's $5k annually.

Little droplets? Big river.

As the world teeters on the brink of climate catastrophe, the cost of inaction is just too great. We can wallow in despair, or we can use our collective power to turn the tide. We are being invited to link arms with Indigenous Peoples whose traditions and laws offer potent frameworks in how to live in balance with the natural world. It's our honour to be in this struggle with them, and with you.

Take courage, and jump in: make this the season to
join RAVEN's Circle of Allies.

With love,

The RAVEN Team
