Chapter News
Kamloops - AGM and Community Solar Talk!

The Kamloops Chapter had a good turnout at their AGM November 14 and a fascinating presentation about community solar.

Speaker Rob Baxter made the trip from Vancouver and explained the details of Solshare and other community solar models. Many well-informed people in the audience asked excellent questions.

The Kamloops steering committee and others in Kamloops have been thinking about community solar for a few years and were happy to learn more about it.

Vancouver - First Hackathon was a Success!

HallowHacks 2018 was a huge success! 2 days of halloween-themed ideation, brainstorming, mentorship, and product development by a group of enthusiasts led to clever approaches to engage the public towards sustainable energy causes.

This is just the beginning of a journey for promising ideas to thrive under the support and guidance of event sponsors.

The event memories page is now live at http://hallowhacks.com/memories.html .

Victoria Chapter Updates

We are delighted to welcome our new Steering Committee members and as 2018 comes to a close, we want to give a shout out to our volunteers who make it happen all year!

A quick overview of our 2018 successes are:

- YIP - Youth Involvement Project, educating high school students about renewable energy and implementing a work experience program
- Pitched to Victoria a solar PV array for the Centennial Square bandstand
- Made 100% RE presentations to half a dozen groups
- Closed a dozen blocks of downtown Victoria for Car Free Day with 35,000 attendees
- Held 4 pub nights with speakers on home retrofit grants, green investing and more

And many more that can be read about here!

The Victoria Chapter worked diligently to align our budgeting and accounting with the new standards that came with BCSEA’s newly acquired charitable status

For 2019, we will continue YIP and the 100% RE by 2050 initiative, and we look forward to working with BCSEA head office to strengthen the organization, build membership, collaborate more with other chapters and generally support sustainable energy in BC.

Cool-It Program

Our Cool It 2018/19 school year has kicked off with students in New Westminster and Port Moody taking action for the climate.

After working hard on our 4-week climate challenge, the students completed a combined total of 3163 actions, which we project will save 141.834 tonnes of CO2e from being released if the students and their families continue their efforts for the year! Congratulations to the top students and the top class at Port Moody Middle School and Fraser River Middle School.

A huge thank you to the City of New Westminster and the City of Port Moody for sponsoring the workshops and Science World for sponsoring passes as prizes for our amazing winners.

On that note, the BC Green Games are now taking entries and we encourage all young people to submit their green projects! We would love to see some Cool It! alumni featured!

The Cool It! team would like to hear from teachers interested in the workshops for their schools and we're also looking for sponsorship of prizes to help encourage and motivate our youth sustainability champions!
