Never Mine Clayoquot Event Poster

Hi PAOV,

Clayoquot Sound is a region of unprecedented ecological value and cultural diversity. But it has a history of resource overexploitation – and it continues today. The threat of clearcut logging in some of Canada’s last intact coastal temperate rainforests is always present, and recently, some parts of Clayoquot have been targeted for mining.

The most immediate plans are to explore a potential gold deposit at a site called Fandora in the Tranquil Valley, in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation territory near Tofino. The Tla-o-qui-aht are worried about the impacts of mining on their forest recovery and their salmon rehabilitation efforts. They have also declared the Tranquil Valley a Tribal Park, and mining is in direct contrast with their sustainable management strategies and goals.

The Wilderness Committee strongly supports Tla-o-qui-aht opposition to mining in their territory, and we see Tribal Parks as a positive economic alternative.

Join us next Tuesday for a panel discussion on the environmental and socio-economic risks of mining, with a focus on the proposed Fandora gold mine in Clayoquot Sound!

What: Never Mine Clayoquot – A Panel Discussion on Mining in Clayoquot Sound & Beyond

When: Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Human & Social Development Building, Room A240, University of Victoria

At the end of last summer, the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines granted the mine proponent (Vancouver-based Imperial Metals) an exploration permit, despite environmental concerns and the clear opposition from Tla-o-qui-aht. Read more about the decision here.

Please join us as we welcome Saya Masso, councillor and Natural Resource Manager for the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, to Victoria. Saya will share information on Tla-o-qui-aht efforts to stop mining activity in their territory, and explain how you can help support their opposition.

Saya will be joined on the panel by Filipino mining activist Dr. Chandu Claver, myself, and others with experience in mining issues for an informative discussion on the risks of mining, problems with mining legislation and reviews, and strategies to stop short-sighted and unwanted mines.

I hope to see you there!

For the wild,
