Happy New Year! Here's to stronger public health care in 2020

Dear Paov --

Happy New Year! In this, our first month without unfair MSP fees for almost everyone in BC, we send a huge thanks to you, and all our members, for being there with us working to strengthen public health care for all.

This success is due to your hard work, donations and support, and is only part of the improvements we continued to see throughout 2019, such as:

  • In March, thanks to changes advocated by BCHC members, and implemented by the Ministry of Health, we learned from the Canadian Institute for Health Information that BC is one of the few provinces where wait times are going down for surgeries.
  • The BC Health Coalition welcomed the government’s strategy of building and purchasing MRI suites across the province and seeing improved MRI wait times in all BC health authorities,... especially in the north.
  • As the government continues to make big capital investments in building and improving new hospitals, we are glad to see them rejecting expensive and inefficient Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), opting instead for a Design-Build model.

But, as you know, despite this real progress, there is still much more that we need to do to push for deeper, long-lasting systemic changes. And we are so glad that you will be there as we continue this on-going work.

Some of the many campaigns we will be focusing on in 2020 will include:

  • Developing a seniors’ care strategy to catch up from years of neglect and privatization in the sector.
  • Pushing the government to follow through on their promise to fund and develop Community Health Centres that provide responsive, community-led, team-based primary care.
  • Continuing to work toward reduced wait times through efficiencies and evidence-based improvements such as centralized wait lists and expanding “one stop shop” patient assessment clinics and improving home and community care.
  • Working with our national allies to ensure full, universal pharmacare becomes a reality.
  • Preparing for the judgement on the Cambie Case, the multi-year Charter challenge CEO Brian Day brought against our health care legislation and, if successful, will lead to US-style health care in Canada.

As well, we are excited to let you know that we will be holding a 2-day public health care conference in the spring of 2020. We will be sending out information shortly in the new year. We hope that you will be able to join us and other public health care advocates for learning, sharing and networking.

We know that we will be able to count on your continued support in this on-going work, through your email and letter-writing, and spreading the word about the importance of our public health care system and that we can’t stop fighting for it and the necessary improvements that will ensure everyone will get care when they need it (and not if they can pay for it).

Memberships and donations are also a great way to support this on-going work. Your donation of even $10 will help ensure that we are able to campaign and advocate for even stronger, more equitable health care. Can we count on you in this ongoing work?.

You can donate safely on-line HERE, or you can mail a cheque using the attached donation form (click HERE) and mailing it to the address below.

Together, we can ensure that our health care is based on need, and not on the ability to pay. Thank you again!

Happy holidays, and here’s to a New Year full of good health and even better public health care,
