The Kootenay region of British Columbia, renowned for the many beautiful mountains and lakes, has long been environmentally conscious. This came to the forefront in 2016 when SunMine – Canada’s largest solar project and largest solar tracking system – opened on an old mining site near Kimberley earning nationwide attention.

Victoria Chapter's first event for 2020 will be on January 26th with an update on government action to cut transportation emissions. Dan Clancy from the Clean Transportation Branch will address Zero Emission Vehicles, the Clean Energy Vehicle Program and the Specialty Use Vehicle Incentive Program. Our first Okanagan Sustainable Energy Task Force Meeting is coming up on January 26, 2020 from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., and we are hoping to connect with our community in the central Okanagan region to discuss solutions from our fall forum, Powering Sustainable Energy. BCSEA's Kamloops Chapter held our first-ever volunteer orientation meeting on Thursday, January 16. Despite the cold and the snowy streets, a group of enthusiastic volunteers turned up. Along with guests from two allied organizaitons, we described the various volunteer opportunities in on-going and new projects supporting sustainability initiatives. Everyone was enthusiastic and happy to step up with ideas and skills, so it was a good evening overall!

Cool It! Updates

One happy student in our winning Fall class in Comox Valley

Students at Dorothea Walker Elementary planted seeds in newspaper pots for their celebration as the top class in the school!

City of North Vancouver winning Fall class - Queensbury Elementary

This school year (2019-2020) sure is a busy one for the Cool It! team. We are working with 140 elementary classes, and up to 40 high school classes, that's a whopping 4,400 BC youth! Half of these youth have succesfully participated in Cool-It! last Fall, becoming Climate Champions! Above are some of our favourite action shots.

We're working with students across the province, including in the Comox Valley region, Victoria, Saanich, Central Saanich, the Capital Regional DIstrict, Port Moody, Langley, West Vancouver and Delta, Kelowna, Nelson, Nanaimo and Squamish.

Policy Corner BCSEA Supports Fleet Electrification Rates

BCSEA’s most recent legal argument at the BC Utilities Commission supports conversion of fleets of vehicles and vessels from fossil fuels to clean electricity.

Individual electric vehicles are already on the road in BC, and more are on the way. Next to come are whole fleets such as transit buses and delivery trucks, and electric vessels such as ferries.
