An update on Canadas new climate acc

r1 It’s a big deal! But it needs some work… ... NOVEMBER 2020 r19 WCEL logo Dear Paov,

Yesterday, the federal government introduced Bill C-12, the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act – Canada's first-ever legislation aimed at holding our government accountable for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This is big news! And it’s happening because of the thousands of people like you who have joined us in calling for a strong federal law to ensure meaningful climate progress.

So does this new bill have what it takes to achieve our climate targets?

West Coast’s legal team has been busy analyzing the legislation, and while we’re excited that we finally have a climate accountability bill on the table, like many Canadians we’re concerned that it’s not as strong as it needs to be.

For instance, the bill doesn’t require the government to set an interim target and GHG reduction plan until 2030 – a full decade from now. To be effective, the law must prioritize immediate action by setting a 2025 target, ensure that the targets we set are as ambitious as possible, and hold government to account for any missed targets.

(You can read more of our initial reaction here.)

Despite its flaws, this new legislation is worth celebrating. We’ve been calling for a strong federal climate accountability law for many years, and we’re committed to working with the government and all parties to strengthen the bill so that it delivers on the promise of true climate action.

None of this work would be possible without the support of people like you – from sending letters to MPs and Cabinet Ministers, to the generous donations that keep our team going. Thank you!

In a year full of challenges and stressful news, let’s take a moment to celebrate this important step for Canadian climate action. With you by our side, we’ll keep on working to make sure this new law fulfills its potential.

Onwards,
