Our allies from the Tsilhqot’in Nation near Williams Lake, BC need our help – and next week you’ll have a chance to show your support by attending an upcoming forum in Victoria!
First Nations like the Tsilhqot'in and Hul'qumi'num are facing a massive push for new resource development on their lands and waters. In response, they’ve launched groundbreaking legal actions that could have profound implications for First Nations land rights and environmental protection in Canada. The Tsilhqot’in people – long-time friends of the Wilderness Committee through our campaign to protect Fish Lake – have an important case before the Supreme Court right now to defend their Aboriginal title in the face of logging and mining on their traditional territory.
Next week’s forum will look at the implications of these cases as well as the response from international human rights bodies, and will explain what non-Aboriginal people can do to show their support. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Tsilhqot’in Fish Lake Legal Defense Fund.
Speakers:
• Chief Joe Alphonse, Tsilhqot'in National Government
• Robert Morales, Chief Negotiator, Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group
• Jay Nelson, lawyer for the Tsilhqot'in National Government
• Paul Joffe, lawyer, author and expert on international law
Moderator: Jennifer Preston, Canadian Friends Service Committee
There will also be a silent auction, and light refreshments will be served.
Admission is by donation, and additional donations will be collected to support Tsilhqot'in participation in Taseko Mines Ltd.'s legal action against the scathing review panel report of the New Prosperity Mine.
I hope you can make it!
