BC’s old-growth promises still unmet
Hi Paov,
Last weekend the Pacheedaht, Ditidaht and Huu-ay-aht First Nations called on Premier John Horgan to defer logging in the Central Walbran Valley and the Fairy Creek Watershed. Yesterday, Horgan agreed.
For well over 30 years, you and I have worked to protect the old-growth forests in the Carmanah and Walbran valleys. Together we've had some tremendous successes and suffered some heartbreaking losses. Today is an important milestone.
We celebrate this long-overdue recognition by the BC government of Indigenous rights resulting in the deferral of the equivalent of about five Stanley parks from logging.
But the BC government didn’t just promise to set aside a few key areas, it promised to fully implement the panel review on old-growth including a paradigm shift and to save old-growth forests.

The BC government is clearly feeling the heat on old-growth — it’s time to keep the pressure on. They must act more swiftly to set aside old-growth for protection, and support economic alternatives to old-growth logging for the communities and First Nations that currently rely on it.
You are a part of this glimmer of hope, and we need your help to keep it going.
Thanks to thousands of you who've already taken action. You can always check out our action page — most of the tools there can be used again and again.
Direct pressure on MLAs is best, so I strongly recommend the ‘meet’ tool. Meeting with your MLA can be intimidating — but we hosted and recorded a webinar last month to help walk you through the process.
Together we can win a future built on healthy ecosystems, justice for Indigenous Peoples and giant trees standing tall.
For the ancient forests,
