Hey PAOV,

Yesterday I had five minutes to present to the Victoria City Council about ocean dumping from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) and I wanted to fill you in on how it went:

Victoria has made motions about scrubbers before and is definitely a council that cares about the ocean. It’s tricky to get into all the intricacies of scrubbers turning air pollution into acidic carcinogenic water pollution in the allotted five minutes you have to present to council but council members seemed receptive (especially after I shared the latest shocking report from ICCT on global discharges¹).

What we can do now is show them that this isn’t just a technical issue — real people who they are representing are deeply concerned.

Send an email to the Victory City Council and join me in calling on Victoria to pass a resolution demanding Transport Canada take action on dumping from vessels, including stopping the use of scrubbers.

We’ve made it simple and drafted an email for you, but, adding a personal touch will show your City Council members that you’re serious about cleaning up ship dumping.

Here are a few additional points you could include in your email:

  • Over 5 million metric tons of acidic thermal carcinogenic pollution was dumped in Vancouver – the #4 most dumped upon port globally
