Celebrate Fairy Creek Blockade 1 year anniversary ~ Monday Aug 9 ~ Day of Action ~ 2 - 10:30 pm
Exactly 1 year ago on August 9th, a group of concerned citizens got together to protect Old Growth Forest about to be logged in the Fairy Creek Watershed. They started an active Blockade - to stop destructive clear-cut logging practices of ancient forests, which destroys the ancient biomass & habitat, and sadly contributes to climate change. To be clear, this movement is against logging old growth ancient trees. As Dr Suzanne Simard, UBC Forestry Professor has demonstrated in her research, the old "mother trees" actively nurture the younger trees in the forest -- they share nutrition and water, and help protect the younger trees from insect/fungal invasion.
The science research is undeniably clear -- these ancient mother trees are "worth more standing" as Premier John Horgan said himself in October 2020. Sadly, Premier Horgan and his caucus don't believe there are any short term solutions to these complex problems. We believe there are.
Monday's Voices from the Ancestral Frontlines activities include powerful Indigenous ceremonies, speeches, song & dance!
Note: Dr Suzanne Simard and Elizabeth May are both scheduled to speak Monday evening as per the Schedule of Events (below), and are now speaking between 5 - 6 pm, to allow for their busy travel schedules.
