UVic’s Centre for Global Studies, in partnership with Claremont’s Institute for Global Solutions will bring high school students from across Victoria together with UVic researchers and experts to discuss the promise and practice of engaging youth with the world’s greatest challenges. Get ready for an afternoon of musical performances, as well as presentations by author Gwynne Dyer and Moussa Magassa from UVic’s Equity and Human Rights office. Four good reasons to commit sociology: A response to Prime Minister Harper

During a news conference last April, in the wake of a foiled plot to blow up a Via Rail train, Prime Minister Harper said, “this is not the time to commit sociology.” Why not? Four panelists from academic and activist backgrounds explain why critical, well-grounded social analysis, from sociology or other perspectives, is indispensable in reviving democracy in our troubled world. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology and the Interdisciplinary Program in Social Justice Studies.

Cultural Traditions on Peace and Conflict for Social Justice, Human Rights and Relational Ethics

What can we learn about conflict resolution and peacemaking from different cultural beliefs and practices? What does reconciliation look like from different cultural perspectives? How do these compare with Western approaches to respecting individual and collective human rights?
This panel presentation and interactive workshop explores a diversity of cultural and philosophical approaches to conflict resolution and peacemaking as they apply to human and Indigenous rights, social justice and relational ethics.
Presenters include Dr. Zhenyi Li (Professor, School of Communication & Culture, Royal Roads University), Eli Enns (North American ICCA Consortium Coordinator and Co-founder of the Ha'uukmin Tribal Park), Dr. Kelly Bannister (Co-Director, POLIS Project), and Moussa Magassa (Human Rights Advisor - Education, Equity and Human Rights Office).
Co-sponsored by the Centre for Global Studies/POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, Equity and Human Rights Office, Social Justice Studies Program and International Society of Ethnobiology.

Queer/Trans 101: The basics of gender & sexuality

Concert without Borders

The UVic Orchestra, under the direction of Ajtony Csaba, goes beyond borders with a concert program that includes Berlioz, Grisey and Beethoven and is punctuated by multi-media interventions highlighting Learning Without Borders projects from across campus. Theatre, song, visual art, and spoken word shine a spotlight on the many ways in which members of the campus community are working to internationalize the curriculum and campus life.
