BC must match new old-growth intention with action

BC must match new old-growth intention with action r1 ...

You made BC accept the science — now let’s push them to act

Hi Paov,

After decades of denial, the BC government has finally embraced science when it comes to threatened old-growth forests.

But acknowledging the crisis and stating good intentions is not the action irreplaceable ancient forests need. Or the BC NDP government promised.

We need to hold them accountable and call on them to finish the job. Will you send a message to Premier John Horgan and your MLA to demand they legislate their promise and protect threatened forests?

Take action now! The BC government announced its ‘new vision’ for old-growth forests on Tuesday. The big change is the province will start using the best scientific methodology to determine how much old-growth remains and the threat it's under. This change is welcome and long overdue.

The Old-growth Strategic Review, concluded a year ago, was unequivocal: logging in at-risk old-growth forests must be deferred to prevent irreversible biodiversity loss. In the year since, the BC government has failed to defer meaningful amounts of these threatened forests. By delaying action further now, the BC NDP is risking that devastating consequence across the province.

We know that our public pressure is what forced this government to change gears on old-growth. Your letters, calls and meetings with MLA’s got us here. It will be our voices that will make Horgan keep his promise to protect old-growth now.

Write to the premier and to your MLA today and thank them for getting behind the science. Call on them to defer logging in all at-risk old-growth and commit substantial funding to support First Nations and communities in this transition. Write my letter now! Want to learn more about the announcement, what it changes, and what it doesn’t? Join us for a webinar tomorrow evening at 7 pm where we'll dig into the details, break down where things go from here and answer your questions. If you can't make it, the webinar will be recorded and posted on our website. After decades of this fight, there are some signs of hope that the tide is turning and the protection of old-growth forests is within reach. I can’t thank you enough for your work on this over the years.
