Dear Paov,
Today, West Coast Environmental Law and our allies announced that we have launched an important legal action. But this time, it’s not about pipelines or pollution – it’s about stopping the lies.
Together with four other Canadian environmental groups, we’re suing Premier Jason Kenney and the Alberta government for spreading false, defamatory statements that undermine our critical work to protect the environment and tackle climate change.
For many years, environmental groups and public interest environmental law organizations have faced repeated attacks designed to distract from the real issues – from politicians and commentators more interested in questioning our sources of funding than climate action, to the countless trolls on social media.
We thought our worst headaches were over when the final report from the Public Inquiry into Anti-Alberta Energy Campaigns cleared West Coast and other environmental organizations of any wrongdoing. Further, despite the hopes of climate-deniers, the Alberta Inquiry DID NOT find that environmental groups were involved in “dissemination of misleading or false information”. But instead of accepting the results of this pointless inquiry, Premier Kenney and the Alberta government distorted the facts.
Documents on the Alberta government website, amplified by Premier Kenney on social media, falsely state that the Inquiry report confirmed we engaged in “campaigns based on misinformation” that have “impacted the lives and livelihoods of Albertans”.
It is time to end these tiresome efforts to seed mistrust in the credibility of the environmental movement – lies that weaken our collective ability to address the climate and biodiversity crises.
It’s time to set the record straight.

Premier Kenney and the Alberta government have refused to retract their false statements, and continue to misrepresent the findings of the report from their own Inquiry – so now we’re taking them to court.
You can read more about the case in our press release here. If you’d like to show your support, please consider making a donation to support the work of West Coast Environmental Law Research Foundation or

Today we’re standing up against Kenney’s bullying, and standing up for democracy and climate action. Thank you for continuing to stand with us.
Onwards,
Jessica Clogg
