Dear Paov,
Today, on World Wildlife Day, we’re turning our attention to marine wildlife and ocean ecosystems that are vital to our local cultures, economies and livelihoods.
We are fortunate to have access to not one, but three oceans in Canada, and West Coast Environmental Law is fighting hard to protect the abundance of these oceans. Some of the most effective legal tools to safeguard our oceans are marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs are important areas of the ocean that are legally set aside for long-term conservation aims (like national parks but in the water).
Along with long-term conservation benefits, MPAs also support climate change adaptation and mitigation while providing other ecosystem services.
West Coast Environmental Law has been advocating for the creation of new MPAs co-governed with Indigenous nations, as well as a boost in resources available for existing MPAs – and we depend on your help to do it. DONATE TO SUPPORT MPAs
Paov, your donation today can help us implement MPAs from coast-to-coast-to-coast, which can provide some key benefits, including:
- Protecting habitat-forming species like kelp forests, eelgrass, shellfish and sponge reefs
- Conserving the biodiversity of fish stocks
- Producing more and larger fish, which “spill over” into adjacent areas and benefit fisheries
- Protecting blue carbon-sequestering natural features, mitigating the impacts of climate change
- Providing baseline data on effects of climate change, to allow us to better prepare for future impacts
- Acting as an insurance policy for future generations against ecosystem collapse
Well-designed and well-implemented MPAs have the potential to provide these and countless other environmental and social benefits, including climate and biodiversity benefits – all of which are amplified when planned into an MPA network, like the network currently in development in the Great Bear Sea.
As part of our effort to establish strong standards in MPAs, last year, West Coast Environmental Law worked with partners to release a Toolkit for Reducing Shipping Impacts in MPAs – but our work is far from complete.
Paov, as someone who cares about the protection of the environment, can we count on you today – on World Wildlife Day – to help us continue our work on MPAs so that we can continue to share the oceans with abundant sea life?
From the team at West Coast Environmental Law, we wish you a very Happy World Wildlife Day!
Sincerely,
Erin Gray
