The BCEAO wants feedback on Tilbury LNG

Hi Paov,

Last Monday was the release of the latest global climate report. It shows us all the ways climate change makes life on Earth more difficult.

Of course, here in BC, we don’t need a report to tell us.

We’ve felt climate disasters first-hand. Dizzyness after days in scorching heat. Anxiety wondering how we’ll get home when torrential rains have knocked out highways. Disbelief at the loss of a treasured town in mere minutes.

Environment Minister George Heyman says BC can no longer wait to fight climate change. We agree. But talk is cheap. Will he do the right thing and ask the BC Environmental Assessments Office (BCEAO) to reject the expansion of Tilbury LNG?

Write my letter today! FortisBC wants to turn its existing LNG storage plant on the banks of the Fraser River into a major export and refueling facility. This expansion alone could create as much carbon pollution as major cities like Vancouver and Surrey. It would increase emissions from BC’s oil and gas sector when the CleanBC plan requires them to be cut by 33 per cent.

Climate disasters will only get worse until we stop burning fossil fuels. Tilbury LNG would lock in decades of consumption of fracked gas. It’s completely out of line with provincial and regional climate goals. If Minister Heyman shares our urgency in fighting climate change, he can prove it by rejecting Tilbury LNG.

His BCEAO recently launched a public comment period to determine the scope of its review. Can you write in and let them know the full climate impacts of Tilbury LNG must be taken into account? WRITE NOW This process is just getting started and there will be more opportunities to plug in. But it’s crucial we get the ground rules right so decision-makers actually have all the information they need to reject the project. Tilbury LNG can and must be a turning point for this government to abandon its support for the gas industry. Together we can make it happen.
